My office/studio/bike-storage space has been a wreck for quite a long time now: crap is piled everywhere, making my blood pressure spike whenever I enter that room. Not a conducive place to hang out in and create anything, certainly! To that end, last night I started cleaning some stuff up, actually packing away excess music equipment that was only serving as a distraction, and was also spread out over the place, taking up too much room. I left out exactly four pieces of gear, and I've positioned them on my main workstation so they're always within easy reach. The master controller keyboard was nice to have, but I never used it anyways...

Last night Raf and I checked out the Legowelt live show. Overall it was pretty enjoyable, although the sound at the club was kinda crap ("Dear Paradise Lounge, please invest in some subs, thank you!"). One of the tracks he played was a sort of Detroit-ish 909+303 acid stomper...all it needed was a good couple of vocal samples "aciiieeed...hhhouse". Of course the kids loved it, and it made me realize that sometimes I overthink music. Aggressive repetition isn't necessarily a bad thing! Tonight I worked on the EMX a bit more, and came up with this work-in-progress. Two patterns on the EMX-1, tweaked live and recorded straight into the computer. And HOLY CRAP I just discovered that the EMX has a note-randomize function (look under the MOVE DATA and/or SHIFT NOTE menus) -- good stuff!

The Sincerest Form of Flattery...

They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. To that end, I've decided to reapply one of my oldest music-making learning tools: reproducing my favorite tracks. Trying to reproduce music that you hear on a given instrument effectively forces you to learn how to push the limitations of that equipment. Even if the results aren't perfect, often new tricks are learned in the process...

One of my fav records of all time is Autechre's Incunabula -- so I've decided to re-work the tracks on that album on my Korg EMX-1 as a means to learn the ins and outs of that box. Here's the first, the last track on the record, "444". This is one pattern on the EMX, tweaked in realtime and recorded straight into the computer...
